Photographing an event like this is always difficult because of the lighting (never any good) suggest you use a flash to freeze the movement or use a longer exposure (making sure you compensate. Try a completely different angle, try zooming in on one feature of the artist. There are many varied and different techniques use can use in this situation. Main advantage of digital photography DELETE what you don't like!
Exactly - I was a bit scared to get up in their faces to be honest, and this was the first big thing I'd done with my camera so it was a 'breaking it in' exercise...but won't be doing it again, I'll stick to nature and scenery, with the occasional studio shoot =)
Don't be frightened. I'm sure the performers won't mind and if you get a good shot it is always worth offering them a copy. Works wonders for the self esteem! Be positive and this will show in your work.
